East Africa is one of the richest bird areas in the world. With a wealth of different habitats, often close to each other, it's quite easy to spot over 100 species in one day. Although many of the birds are brightly colored and exotic looking, they are generally quite easily recognized; within a day or two you will be identifying the various species with ease! Their main habitats include water, open plains, woodlands and farmlands.
On or near water, you will find bright pink Flamingos, Hammerkops, iridescent Kingfishers, Plovers, Herons, Storks, Geese, Cranes, Jacanas and of course the magnificent African Fish Eagle. In certain places along the coast there are breeding pairs of Osprey as well. The open savannah plains, where the majority of the big safaris take place, offer excellent bird watching opportunities for some unusual ground dwellers. The Ground Hornbill, at nearly 110 cm. tall is one of the largest and most visible; the tall Secretary bird is also spotted often. Eagles, vultures, and ostrich, the largest bird on earth, are also spotted frequently.
The smaller plains birds, such as the Ox-peckers, snowy white Egrets, brilliant Sunbirds and bustards are also found in abundance; you can't miss seeing birds on any game drive! Near the woodlands, you'll find yet more species with starlings of every color, Bee-eaters, Drongos, Hornbills, Shrikes, the beautiful Lilac-breasted Roller, Barbets and Guinea Fowl.
Arriving into the big city airports, frequently the first birds spotted are the urban and farmland dwellers, such as the Wagtails and Weaverbirds, with their huge nest colonies. Even a short two or three day safari will provide an excellent species count for the ardent bird watcher; a longer trip will ensure a superb introduction to the over 1,000 species found in East Africa.

Mara and the Rift Valley Lakes- 4 Nights/5 Days - Nairobi - L. Naivasha - L.Nakuru - Masai mara

Day 01: Nairobi - Lake Naivasha
After breakfast we depart from our Nairobi hotel for a scenic drive through the Great North road to Lake Naivasha. Stop en-route at the view points of the Great Rift Valley for stunning views arriving Lake Naivasha by mid-morning for bird walk before time for lunch at Lake Naivasha Lodge. Lake Naivasha being close to Lake Nakuru and 65 miles from Nairobi, is freshwater Lake. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1967 and also supports pastoral industries of wine and flowers. During our full day field trip to Lake Naivasha, we study the birds of the region such as herons, fish eagles, ospreys, black crakes, and lily-trotters. Dominated by the shadow of Mt. Longonot, few lakes in the world have a more commanding or spectacular setting than Naivasha. We also have an excursion to the Elsa mere Center. Activities include reliving the experience of Joy Adamson and Elsa while viewing "Born Free." Lake Naivasha being on the Rift floor is home to an incredible variety of species. Over 450 species have been recorded here. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Naivasha Lodge.

Day 02: Lake Naivasha - Lake Nakuru

This morning we leave Naivasha and head for Lake Nakuru Park, regarded by avid birders' as the greatest World ornithological spectacle on the Earth. The park is famous for its millions of pink flamingoes lining on the lake shore, arriving by mid morning at Lake Nakuru for a game drive en route before checking-in at Lake Nakuru Lodge for Lunch. Afternoon game drive followed by a walk along the shores which will also allow us to see the many wild animals in the park and especially the park is
the Sanctuary to the Black Rhino, White Rhino and the Rothschild Giraffe. Here we'll have the chance to look out at some of the common species like the Lesser and Greater Flamingoes, African fish Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Green Wood Hoopoes, Cliff Chat, Great White and Pink Backed Pelicans plus other intra- African Migrants. Dinner and Overnight stay today will be at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

Day 03: Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara
Soon after breakfast, drive across the floor of the Great Rift Valley the longest rift in the crust of the Earth to Masai Mara Game Reserve the unspoiled Savannah. Masai Mara is actually the northern portion of the Great Plains ecosystem in the neighboring Tanzania called Serengeti. It is a home to the "big five" lion, buffalo, rhino, leopard and elephant as well cheetah, zebra, giraffe and vast herds of plain antelope and numerous and other wildlife. Our accommodation for the nights will be at one of the excellent lodge Mara Sopa Lodge. Sopa is a Masai word meaning welcome and indeed this is a tradition which has be well adopted by the lodge to all guest. Set in the Oloolaimutia valley the lodge blends in the perfectly with its surrounding hillside landscape. After lunch and some time to relax and perhaps take a dip in the pool, you will depart with your driver guide for an afternoon game drive in search of the big five. As sun starts to edge dip into the horizon, it will be perfect time to photograph the beautiful Mara rolling plains. Don't forget this is the right time to spot the shy leopard. Dinner & overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge (BLD).

Day 04: Masai Mara
A full day in the Mara, the extensive grasslands are a strong hold to the threatened, migratory Corncrake and the near threatened Jackson's widowbird. The bush and woodlands around the reserve also hold some unique bird species, more than 450 bird species have been recorded in the Mara, including 12 species of cisticola and birds of prey. Large numbers of palaerctic migrants winter in the area including
Caspian plovers and white storks. Other local and unusual birds in the Mara include Rock Cisticola, Rufous Bellied Heron, Denham's Bustard, Black Coucal, Red Tailed chat, Pale Wren Warbler, Tabora Cisticola, Yellow Bellied Hyliota, Green-capped Eremomela and Magpie Shrike. All meals, dinner and Overnight stay will be at Sarova Mara Camp.

Day 05: Masai Mara - Nairobi
After breakfast, we drive back to Nairobi arriving in time for lunch at Toona Tree Restaurant where you can enjoy some good Italian food, Check-in to day room at Nairobi hotel. Farewell dinner Later early in the evening, will be hosted by our company at the world famous Carnivore Restaurant considered "Africa's greatest eating experience" (if you love barbecue it doesn't get better than this), and home
to the "Simba Saloon" one of the cities most popular night clubs. Thereafter you will be transferred to the airport in time for your International departure flight.

Nairobi - Lake Elementaita - Lake Naivasha - Hell's Gate - Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara

Day 01: Arrival Nairobi
On arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta Airport (morning flight), met by our representative and transferred to Nairobi Safari Club Hotel where you will check-in and later we proceed to Nairobi National Park, an ornithological paradise starter within the city environs. Afternoon guided visit to National Museum Bird Gallery, Followed by a short bird walk at Nairobi National Museum Botanic Garden. Here we anticipate
to see species like the Variable Sunbird, Bronze Sunbird and the Collard Sunbird, African Goshawk, Palm swift, Baglafetch Weaver, among others. Lunch, Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Nairobi Safari Club/ similar. (L,D)

Day 02: Nairobi - Lake Elementaita
Morning departure to Lake Elementaita arriving in the mid morning bird walk to try
and identify available species like the Feral lovebird, Avocet, Klaas' cuckoo,
Glossy ibis, Black heron, Red billed Teal, Black tailed godwit among others before time for lunch at Lake Elementaita Lodge. An afternoon bird walk around the lodge environs before time for Dinner and overnight at Lake Elementaita Lodge (BLD).

Day 03: Lake Elementaita - Lake Naivasha
After breakfast we depart from Elementaita for a scenic drive through the Great North road to Lake Naivasha arriving by mid-morning for bird walk before time for lunch at Lake Naivasha Lodge. After breakfast, a morning bird walk with the aim of viewing birds on the shores of the Lake with a few hours of relaxation before lunch. Afternoon visit to Hell's Gate National Park, which is a breeding ground for vultures in Kenya e.g. Lammergeyer vultures we also anticipate for species like Imperial eagle, Schalow's wheatear, Chin spot batis. Dinner & overnight tonight will be served at Lake Naivasha Lodge
(BLD).

Day 05: Hell's Gate National Park - Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast depart for Lake Nakuru National Park known as "The pink Heart Of Kenya" because of the millions of Flamingoes that cover the lake with pink shine. Afternoon game/bird viewing, dinner and overnight stay will be at Lake Nakuru Lodge/Lion Hill.

Day 06: Lake Nakuru National Park
Today we will spend the whole day bird watching at the park and if lucky enough we have the chance to see the shy cat "the Leopard" mostly seen in this park before returning for lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon we have some time to relax before embarking on our late afternoon game drive to try and capture what was not seen during the day before the dusk engulf us. Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Lake Nakaru Lodge/Sarova Lion Hill.

Day 07: Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara

An early morning birding cum game drive after breakfast will be our perfect start of another unforgettable and memorable birding days in Africa. With picnic lunchen-route you spend your day in Mara Plains trying to identify and record the over 450 species record in this reserve. All meals and Overnight tonight will be served at, Mara Sopa Lodge (BLD).

Day 09: Masai Mara - Nairobi

TVB 003: Bird Watcher’s Special

8 Nights/9 Days Nairobi - L. Magadi - L. Naivasha - L. Nakuru - L. Baringo - Samburu
- Mt. Kenya - Nairobi

Day 01: Arrival
On arrival you will be met at the airport by our representative and transferred to a Nairobi Hotel where you will spend your overnight stay. We shall then head out for an orientation tour of the town before paying a visit to the National Museum bird's gallery for a lecture on birds before dusk engulfs us at our Hotel.

Day 02: Nairobi - Lake Magadi
After breakfast we leave Nairobi and then drive to the southern side of Kenya with a picnic Lunch and to Lake Magadi located deep in the heart of Southern Kenya's Masai land. The lake covers an area of 104 sq. km Soda Lake and is completely surrounded by vast natural salt flats. These sweltering plains prevent any animals from reaching the alkaline lake at its center. For this reason, thousands of flamingos descend on the Lake each year to feed on the algae and crustacea at the lake's shore safe from any potential predators such as Fish eagle. Freshwater springs at the Lake's shore attract a host of other birds like the specialty of this lake the Chestnut Banded Plover, Common Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper to name a few. Later in the afternoon we return to Nairobi arriving late evening. Dinner and
Overnight stay will be at our Nairobi Hotel.

Day 03: Nairobi - Lake Naivasha
After breakfast we depart from our Nairobi hotel for a scenic drive through the great North road to Lake Naivasha. Stop en-route at the viewpoints of the Great Rift Valley for stunning views arriving Lake Naivasha by midmorning for bird walk before time for lunch at Lake Naivasha Lodge. Lake Naivasha being a fresh water lake on theRift floor is home to an incredible variety of species. Over 450 species have been recorded here. An afternoon option of either a boat ride or a visit to Hell's Gate
National Park before returning for dinner and overnight stay at Lake Naivasha Lodge.

Day 04: Lake Naivasha - Lake Nakuru

We depart today in the morning after breakfast and drive further North to Lake Baringo, arriving in time mid - morning bird walk around the lodge before time for Lunch. Lake Baringo is fresh water has it own share of bird life species like the White Faced Scopes Owl, Brimstone Canary, Bristol Crowned Starling, Goliath Heron, Little Weaver, Jackson's and Hemprich's Hornbill. We'll check-in at Lake Baringo
Country Club a superb and compact hotel set at the shores of Lake Baringo. After a relaxed lunch we'll descend down on to the cliffs to look for the white faced Scopes owl, Black throated barbet, mouse collared tit before returning at the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay tonight will be at Lake Baringo Country Club (BLD).

Day 06: Lake Baringo - Samburu
We leave Baringo after breakfast and head Samburu, a place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose heat-scorched scrublands extend all the way to the jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond. Physically dramatic, the 104 sq kilometres landscape of the
Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red table mountain known as Lololokwe. As for wildlife, Samburu nprovides one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya for the endangered Grevy's zebra, the rare Beisa Oryx, the long necked antelope "Gerenuk" and the Blue-shanked Somali ostrich whilst large herds of elephant roam the gaunt hills during the day before returning to bathe on the banks of the river in the evening. Birdlife in this reserve is not raging behind as it is profuse, and species such as Somali and white throated bee-eaters, golden pipit, Vulturine guinea fowl, White headed Mouse bird, Buff Crested Bustards, Black capped Social Weaver, Donaldson-Smith's Sparrow Weaver,
Golden Breasted Starling among other dry land species. Lunch will be at Nanyuki Town before descending to the reserve and arriving at time for the evening Game cum bird viewing before checking -in at Samburu Lodge (BLD).

Day 07: Samburu
Today we will spend the whole day bird watching at the park. In the afternoon we have some time to relax before embarking on our late afternoon game drive to try and capture what was not seen during the day before the dusk engulf us. Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Samburu Lodge (BLD).

Day 08: Samburu - Mt. Kenya
We will spend the whole day birding at this Montane forest region. Rare species likely to be seen include; Green Ibis, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Harrier Hawk, Rufous Sparrow hawk, Ayre's Hawk Eagle. Black stork, Red Fronted Parrots, Green Ibis Common snipe, Mountain Buzzard, Bronze napped pigeon Mountain white-eye, Abbots Starling, Sharpe's Starling, Mountain Oriole and Thick-billed seedeater. Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Naro Moru River Lodge (BLD).

Day 09: Mt. Kenya - Nairobi
After breakfast, we drive back to Nairobi arriving in time for lunch at Pampa Grill/similar
Restaurant where you can enjoy some good food.

Day 01: Arrival Nairobi

Nairobi Safari Club formerly a private club for members only is the ideal place to be. Afternoon guided visit to National Museum Bird Gallery, Followed by a short bird walk at Nairobi National Museum Botanic Garden. Here we anticipate seeing species like the Variable Sunbird, Bronze Sunbird and the Collard Sunbird, African Goshawk, Palm swift Baglafetch Weaver, among others. Day 02: Nairobi - Thika
Today we leave in the morning and head Northward of "the city in the sky" towards Thika, Blue Post Inn - unique with its twin waterfalls Chania and Thika Falls, provide rewarding bird watching time for birders'. Here we have an opportunity to encounter with a few coastal species that penetrate into main land following the River Tana. We could be lucky to sight the Trumpeter Hornbill, Brown Hooded Kingfisher, Zanzibar Sombre Green-bull and African Golden Weaver. Great egret, Ayres Hawk Eagle, Green sand piper, African green pigeon, Eastern bronze napped pigeon, Purple Crested Turaco, Green headed sunbird and Black cuckoo shrike before our lunch time at Blue Post Inn Hotel. Later in the afternoon we leave Thika and climb high until the slopes of Mt Kenya, Naro Moru where mountain forest gives way to valley grassland. Unique birds to this area include, Eastern double collared sunbird, Alpine swift, Black Chested snake eagle, Narina Trogon, Scaly throated honey guide, Mountain Wagtail, White headed
wood hoopoe, African Black Duck, Grey Cuckoo shrike and Yellow-bellied waxbill.
Dinner and overnight stay will be at Serena Mountain Lodge (BLD).

Day 03: Mt. Kenya
We will spend the whole and birding at this Mountain Lodge with montane forest. Rare species likely to be seen include; Green Ibis, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Harrier Hawk, Rufous Sparrow hawk, Ayre's Hawk Eagle. Black stork, Red Fronted Parrots, Green Ibis Common snipe, Mountain Buzzard, Bronze napped pigeon Mountain white-eye, Abbots Starling, Sharpe's Starling, Mountain Oriole and Thick-billed seedeater. Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Naro Moru River Lodge (BLD).

Day 04: Mt. Kenya - Lake Baringo/ Lake Bogoria
We leave in the morning and head for Lake Baringo with a stop at the Nyahururu Waterfalls, there are possibilities of sighting Chestnut-Winged Starlings, Slender billed starling, Rock Martin, Grey cuckoo shrike around the waterfalls. Proceed on by road into the Great Rift Valley and onto Lake Bogoria National Park. The Reserve's herd of the rare Greater Kudu makes it unique and other game to view. The south shore of Lake Bogoria has acacia-ficus woodland and to the north is a papyrus swamp. Birds unique to this area include, Congregatory of Lesser and Greater flamingo, Steppe eagle, Curlew Sand piper, Black necked grebe and Black headed Plover. Dinner and Overnight will be at Lake Baringo Country Club (BLD).

Day 05: Lake Baringo
Full day at Baringo, well known by many avid Ornithologist as mecca for Birds, with 500 species of birds having been recorded. Explore this area with field Birding around Lake Baringo, it's environs, the Cliffs and the bushes. There are possibilities to see rare species like, Cape Eagle Owl, White-faced Scops Owl,
Jackson's Hornbill, Hemprich's Hornbill, Brown-Tailed Rock Chat, Nothern Red Bishop, Northern Masked Weaver and White Billed Buffalo Weaver, Olivaceous Warbler, Northern brownbul, Jackson's golden backed weaver, Little weaver, Brown Tailed Rock Chat, Goliath heron, Northern Shoveller, Verreauxs eagle owl, Bristle crowned starling, Senegal Thicknee, Pygmy falcon, Blue cheecked bee-eater. Dinner and Overnight will be at Lake Baringo Country Club (BLD).

Day 06: Lake Baringo - Kakamega forest
Today we leave lake Baringo and head to an isolated remnant of the equatorial rain forest that once spread over Africa from west to east. It contains an excellent representation of bird, animal, and plant species including an array of primates. Kakamega forest through Eldoret. Kakamega forest's aviauna is rich and unusual in its composition. Two globally threatened species reside here, Chapins Flycatcher and
Turners Eremomela. The aviauna is unique not only nationally but also continentally; the forest holds large populations of Black and white colobus and Red tailed monkeys among others. Dinner and Overnight stay at Rondo Retreat Center (BLD).

Day 07: Kakamega forest
Full day bird walk at the eastern most extension of the great tropical rain forest stretching from west Africa. This forest is renowned for its uniqueness and richness in bird life and species like, Turners Eremomela, Black billed Turaco, Great blue turaco, Cameroon Sombre Green bull, Little grey Green bull, Yellow Bellied Wattle eye, Purple-throated cuckoo, Hairy Breasted Barbet, Grey breasted Illadopsis,
African Grey Parrot, Square tailed drongo and Chapins Flycatcher. Lunch, Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Rondo Retread Center (BLD).

Day 08: Kakamega forest - Lake Victoria
We leave this morning after our breakfast and head southwards to the shore's Lake Victoria, our bird walk will be focusing on the Dunga beach Swamp this site is home to one of the most reliable sites in Kenya for the scarce and threatened papyrus yellow warbler. Papyrus Gonolek, Swamp fly catcher, Marsh Tachgra, Jacksons golden backed weaver, Red chested sunbird, Sedge warbler, Carruthers's Cisticola, Southern red bishop, Northern brown throated weaver, Greater swamp warbler. Lunch, Dinner and
Overnight tonight will be Sunset hotel (BLD).

Day 09: Lake Victoria - Lake Nakuru
We leave this morning drive to Lake Nakuru National Park coloured with a shimmering
flamingo pink from thousands of the beautiful birds lining its shores. Nakuru National Park, a shallow and strongly alkaline lake, with surrounding acacia woodland & grassland. Firstly gazetted as a bird sanctuary is, known for its bird life for the thousands of Lesser and Greater flamingos make this lake their home,
among hundreds of other Species unique to this area which include, White winged Black Tern, Hilderbrants Francolin, African fish eagle, Steppe eagle, Grey crested Helmet Shrike, Red-capped lark, Spotted Crake. Wildlife is also in abundance here. Lake Nakuru National Park has been made into one of Kenya's rhino sanctuary. Lunch, dinner and overnight stay tonight will be at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge (BLD).

Day 10: Lake Nakuru - Lake Naivasha
Depart for Lake Naivasha morning bird walk or boat ride (Optional), the only fresh water rift valley lake in Kenya. It's unique in that its' freshness is maintained by a combination of underground out flow and sedimentation of salts. The lake supports a diverse water-bird community, with more than 80 species recorded regularly. It is a significant site for Red knobbed coots, African spoonbill, African jacana and
little grebes depending on water levels. All meals will be served at Lake Naivasha Country Club (BLD) or similar.

Day 11: Lake Naivasha
Full day at the lake Naivasha Region with bird walks around the Club grounds and a visit to the Elsa Mere field study center. Notable birds unique to this area include, Gadwall, Spotted Red Shank, Black Tailed Godwit, Great white egret, Black Headed Gull, Purple Swamp Hen and Mottled swift. Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Lake Naivasha Country Club or similar.

Day 12: Lake Naivasha - Masai Mara
Drive across acres of wheat and barley to Masai Mara. The Masai Mara Game Reserve,
is regarded as the most magnificent natural theatre in the world. Set in the heart of Africa's Great Plains, the Masai Mara boasts 1,672 square kilometers of unspoiled wilderness. It is home to the highest concentration of animals and birds anywhere on the continent. Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Sarova Mara Camp or similar.

Day 13 & 14: Masai Mara
Two full days in the Masai, the extensive grasslands are a strong hold to the threatened, migratory Corncrake and the near threatened Jackson's widowbird. The bush and woodlands around the reserve also hold some unique bird species, more than 450 bird species have been recorded in the Mara, including 12 species of cisticola and birds of prey. Large numbers of palaerctic migrants winter in the area including Caspian plovers and white storks. Other local and unusual birds in the Mara include
Rock Cisticola, Rufous Bellied Heron, Denham's Bustard, Black Coucal, Red Tailed chat, Pale Wren Warbler, Tabora Cisticola, Yellow Bellied Hyliota, Green-capped Eremomela and Magpie Shrike. All meals, dinner and Overnight stay will be at Sarova Mara Camp.

Day 15: Masai Mara - Nairobi
After breakfast, we drive back to Nairobi arriving in time for lunch at Toona Tree Restaurant where you can enjoy some good Italian food, Check-in to day room at Nairobi hotel. Farewell dinner later early in the evening, will be hosted by our company at the world famous Carnivore Restaurant considered "Africa's greatest eating experience" (if you love barbecue it doesn't get better than this), and home
to the "Simba Saloon" one of the cities most popular night clubs. Thereafter you will be transferred to the airport in time for your International departure flight.
